About
Brooklyn-based Singer/Songwriter Andi Rae Healy has been a mainstay on New York City’s indie-country scene for over a decade. Her newest LP, Last Time I Checked This Was a Free World and I Wasn't Anybody's Girl, was released in April 2020. Coinciding with the 100th Anniversary of Women's Suffrage, the title track is an anthem to girl power and sexual freedom. Other themes explored in the album include romantic trials and triumphs (‘Come Get Me’, ‘I’ve Been Looking For You’), dark stories of mysterious characters (‘I Met a Man’, ‘Curse’), tongue-in-cheek musings on monotony (‘Bored’) which prove prescient in a socially-distanced world, and razor-sharp commentary on our current political crisis (‘What Were You Thinking’). Produced by fellow Brooklyn musician Jeff Litman, Last Time I Checked… draws its diverse musical influences from classic country crooners like Patsy Cline and Tammy Wynette; the 60s influenced, swinging pop of April March and Nancy Sinatra; the raw emotional honesty of contemporary singer/songwriters Aimee Mann, Lissie, and Sheryl Crow; and even the lushly orchestrated scores of classic Disney films.
Healy’s debut album, I Guess I am a Sinner–featuring contributions from artists as diverse as pop princess, Cyndi Lauper and indie darling, Jill Sobule–was released in 2006 and earned rave reviews for its deep melodicism, shimmering production, and its brutally honest and painfully heartfelt lyrics. In 2015, following a successful Kickstarter campaign that raised over $12,000, Andi Rae released her long-anticipated follow up: a hard-driving, boot-stomping effort with hints of 90s rock and classic country entitled If You Want to Be My Man.
In the interim, Andi Rae has performed across the country, been a finalist at World Cafe Live's Philly Rising Showcase, played shows for the Honky Tonk Angels and Brooklyn Country, as well as hosting and organizing annual Earth Day shows and fundraisers to support the environmental causes that she cares so deeply about.
Andi Rae looks forward to returning to her active presence on stage after our current Conronavirus-imposed hiatus, and all of her work (with her stalwart band, The Back River Bullies, currently featuring Jeff Litman on guitar, Danny Reisbick on bass and Michael Graves on drums) is available to stream and purchase at Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple Music, and most other online outlets. Physical CDs and vinyl are available for purchase through her Bandcamp store.
Press
"As impressive as indie gets...Healy clearly thinks like a mature artist, weaving images together into a thematic continuity that is ever-present yet subtle."
- Barney Quick, IndieMusic.com
Andi Rae Healy's Latest Is So Good It's Almost Sinful...Healy’s vocals are at once potent, powerful, fragile, beckoning, vulnerable yet guarded. She writes like someone who has tasted her share of life; has been hurt; has been exhilarated; has found and lost her faith. There is a dare in this music...Yes sir, this is one dangerous woman."
- Mike Parker - BuddyHollywood.com
"The result is a bluesy, alternative-country album that showcases her powerful voice over lush instrumentation."
- Steve Wildsmith, The Daily Times - Knoxville, TN
"Healy is fortunate to possess a voice of her own and strong songwriting and arranging skills. She's one to watch."
- Doug Cornell, Hit Session Spotlight Reviews
"It is obvious right away that she's not afraid to use her full range to express the emotions of her lyrics. Her singing is great - full, honest and even sexy..."
- Steve Allat, The MusesMuse.Com
"The work of a gypsy siren. This album is sure to please fans of the first song straight through to the end."
